Well, I have used some metallic floss for snowflakes, snow, etc and other tiny things but nothing big.

not unless you count the sulky threads that are designed for sewing machines. Lots of people use the heavier weight for cross stitch

I don't know exactly what you mean by "nontraditional", but I've used Fuzzy Stuff ...... and FYI, I didn't like using it.
